Avira Antivirus Premium

Avira60Avira Antivirus Pro is a good, middle-of-the-road antivirus program. Its virus protection and general malware protection scored near the top during most tests. The user interface is better than many competitors, but it draws the same criticism as Bitdefender in that the text is a bit cramped and the settings aren’t always very clear. The performance of antivirus software – in terms of its ability to block attacks, go lightly on system resources and accurately detect threats without confusing good files for dangerous files – is the most important consideration. Additional features are secondary in importance to performance. It turns out that Avira is an outstanding performer, which is why it competes among the best virus protection products in our review.

AviraAvira Antivirus Pro scored well in our in-house tests with a decent success rate. Independent testing scores confirmed this with scores near the top of the heap in virus and spyware protection.  Avira and all of the virus scanners in the lineup made no mistakes whatsoever in correctly identifying safe files and websites. None of them confused dangerous files and websites as safe. However, in the tests designed to measure the virus protection’s effect on system performance, Avira slowed the systems it ran on by an average of one second versus three seconds for the industry average. The results of the performance tests came from five test samples that measured the effects from visiting websites, downloading software, installing and running programs, and copy data. The most astounding test results for Avira, however, emerged during protection tests against malware infections.

Avira continues to be a moderate antivirus software among its competitors. Their basic antivirus protection scores near the top in most departments, though it’s hampered by a less-than-ideal interface. Avira Antivirus Pro is a better antivirus for PC product than half of the competitors in our product review. It’s just that, for Americans, it would be necessary to telephone long-distance to Europe if you had a situation that couldn’t be resolved via email. And in a market where most competitors provide online chat access to technical support, Avira does not. Finally, while quite a few of Avira’s competitors cover more than one PC with a single license, an Avira license protects just one PC.
