AVG Anti-Virus

AVG60AVG has built their reputation on solid, free antivirus software for some years now. It’s always been a good “go to” software for a lot of consumers to try out when they thought they might have a virus infection. AVG anti-malware software provides reliable protection, reacts quickly to zero-day threats and protects you from sharing bad links and files with your friends. It also now comes with free Android mobile security. However, basic, free antivirus isn’t enough anymore. At the very least, a fully functional antivirus program is needed (such as AVG Anti-Virus). Even better, is a robust Internet Security suite.

AVG Antivirus includes numerous advanced tools such as identity protection, Wi-Fi protection, email scanning and Android mobile security. Overall, AVG provides dependable malware protection and performs well. AVG scored well with most antivirus testing labs as it did with ours. Scores were average to high for both real-time antivirus protection and virus removal. In our own tests AVG had 90% success in blocking known malicious sites. Quite respectable, though other antivirus products scored better. Also, we saw instances with rootkit removal where AVG had trouble removing them. Rebooting a PC is not out of the ordinary with some of the particularly nasty threats we use, and AVG was no exception here, though it often required multiple reboots to finish a removal. So why did AVG Anti-Virus earn such a high score in this department? As basic antivirus software, AVG still outperformed a lot of competitors in this class. If basic antivirus protection is all you want, you can expect AVG to do the job nicely.

To find the best antimalware software for our readers, we test the products and confer with third-party test labs to determine which software can provide the most consistent and dependable protection.. In fact, many antimalware applications score well in detection but not as high in malware removal and AVG follows this trend in the latest round of tests. Since AVG’s free download is so popular, AVG Technologies is aggressive and creative in terms of providing useful additional features with the paid versions of its software so that people will want to upgrade. Some valuable upgrades include file (upload and download) scanning, priority updates, chat protection and social network link-sharing protection. AVG will scan files you want to download – even those shared through instant messaging. A technology unique to AVG is that it will guard your computer from causing your friends problems by ensuring that the links you share are safe before you post them to Facebook or Twitter. This is an online relationship saver because if you share one bad link, your friends will be leery of enjoying your posts.

On the surface, AVG’s user interface is clean, modern, and easy to use. Big buttons label each section making it easy to navigate. Inside each section are clear and simple switches that activate or deactivate features. However, if you need to make more detailed adjustments to any particular feature, the advanced settings can be confusing. The text is small and seemingly jumbled together. Clicking deeper within the expanding tree, it can be difficult to know what to select or deselect. For an average PC user, it’s not ideal.

AVG malware protection provides just what most people want – dependable security that is not too intrusive. This antimalware software consistently proves that it is powerful enough for combat in the malware arena and flexible enough to react to emerging and mutating malware. The company supports its customers with around-the-clock support and continues to find ways to improve its service. If you have been enjoying AVG Free for years as many have, it may be time to step up and upgrade to the paid version; you will not be disappointed. Bottom line, AVG Anti-Virus is a good option for those needing basic antivirus software and troubleshooting / doing your own tech support is the preferred option.
